URBAN TIMELAPSE PLANNING GUIDE
How to Plan an Urban Timelapse
Choose a scene where movement, light or activity creates a meaningful change, then define how the sequence will be used and delivered.
Sequence Role
Start with what the timelapse needs to reveal.
Compressed time is most useful when the changing scene supports a specific opening, transition, mood or piece of visual evidence.
State where the sequence will appear, how long it may be used on screen and what change should remain legible. This gives the production team a better basis for choosing subject, framing and capture window.
Subject Choice
Look for sustained change rather than a famous view alone.
Traffic flow, pedestrian movement, cloud development and changing light can all work when the visual transformation fits the brief.
Movement
Identify the activity that should become visible when time is compressed.
Duration
Consider whether the scene is likely to change meaningfully during the available window.
Context
Keep enough of the surroundings visible for the viewer to understand the place.
Framing and Access
A stable viewpoint must also be practical and appropriate.
The ideal composition is only useful if the location can support the planned capture without making unverified access assumptions.
- Define the essential city subject
- Describe preferred foreground and background
- State orientation and safe crop needs
- Identify possible obstructions
- Provide acceptable alternative viewpoints
- Confirm access separately where required
Capture Window
Choose timing around the change you need to see.
Day-to-night transitions, traffic patterns and weather-dependent scenes create different planning risks and visual outcomes.
Set a preferred capture window and explain the reason behind it. Build in an alternative when the sequence depends heavily on weather, visibility, access or a specific level of public activity.
A preference for certain conditions is not a guarantee that those conditions will occur during production.
Technical Delivery
Specify the finished sequence and any source material you expect.
Frame size, orientation, duration, speed treatment and file expectations should be addressed before capture.
| Requirement | Briefing prompt |
|---|---|
| Placement | Where will the sequence appear and at what aspect ratio? |
| Look | Should movement feel calm, energetic or observational? |
| Output | What finished files and variations are required? |
| Usage | Which channels, territories and campaign uses are planned? |
Timelapse Enquiry
Bring the subject, viewpoint and intended use into one brief.
Share references and priorities so the proposed sequence can be reviewed against local feasibility.
